Cottage Renovation

June 21, 2011

Just in time for the first day of summer, The Troxel Company completes a cottage renovation on Spring Lake.

Our homeowner’s comment during renovation was “Has my husband told you how much we are liking the improvements? We love the new look!”

Utilizing James Hardie ColorPlus Technology siding in the SailCloth color brought a sunny low maintenance existence to this cute cottage.

Ottawa ranked Michigan’s healthiest county

April 8, 2011

The Troxel Company is proud to be a part of this healthy community.

Ottawa County, MI —

Ottawa County residents can expect to live longer on average than people from anywhere else in Michigan, according to County Health Rankings released today.

Residents in Ottawa County are half as likely to die prematurely compared to people living in Clare County, ranked last in the state. The report ranks counties based on health, education, environment and economic factors.

“This is just another testament to how great of a place Ottawa County is to work and live and play and to invest,” said Shannon Felgner, spokeswoman for the Ottawa County Health Department. “Good health is a means to an end — when people are healthy, they can live meaningful and satisfying lives.”

Ottawa was second in the 2010 rankings behind Livingston County. Allegan County fell from 14th in 2010 to 21st in 2011.

Even with Ottawa County’s high score, health officials say there’s plenty of room to improve. After all, Ottawa County is only the best in Michigan, which itself ranks 30th among states.

For example, 218 out of every 100,000 Ottawa County residents has chlamydia, a number nearly three times higher than the County Health Rankings’ target value. Both Ottawa and Allegan also have far fewer primary care providers than the target suggests.

In fact, Ottawa County’s annual numbers were slightly worse this year compared to 2010 in several key categories, including the premature death rate, adult obesity, binge drinking, the chlamydia rate and the percent of children living in poverty.

And while Ottawa County ranked first in health outcomes, it was fourth in the health factors category behind Oakland, Livingston and first-place Washtenaw.

“That tells us we still have room to grow,” Felgner said.

The County Health Rankings are compiled by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

Rounding out the top 10 healthiest Michigan counties behind Ottawa are Leelanau, Livingston, Washtenaw, Alger, Clinton, Grand Traverse, Houghton, Emmet and Marquette. Most of the least healthy counties, such as Clare, are in the central part of the state.
